I have tried so many dinner roll recipes over the years, and I could never find one that I really loved. I eventually found a recipe online that was pretty close to what I wanted, but it still wasn’t quite there.
So, like I tend to do, I started messing with it.
I made them over and over, changed a few things, and eventually got them exactly where I wanted them. Somewhere along the way, I also figured out that one of the biggest tricks is to really oil your bowl before the first rise.
I know that sounds silly, but I’m serious. Don’t just lightly grease it. I use a good amount of oil and turn my dough in it so the whole outside gets coated. It has made such a difference in how soft these rolls turn out.
Since then, these have become one of my most asked for recipes. I shared them on social media and couldn’t believe how many people wanted the recipe. Which is a big reason I started my blog, that way my recipes had a home, and people could come back to them anytime they wanted.
They’re also a favorite in our family. Thanksgiving, Christmas, family get-togethers, you can pretty much count on somebody asking if I’m bringing the rolls. I make them for the field as well. At this point, I think I’d have some disappointed family members if I showed up without them.
Honestly, I love that something I spent so much time tweaking has turned into a recipe that other people actually want to make. I think everybody needs a good homemade roll recipe they can count on, and after making batch after batch, this one has definitely become mine.
So, after all the messages asking me to share it, here it finally is: my Farmhouse Dinner Rolls.
And if you take nothing else from this recipe, remember one thing:
Oil the bowl!

- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
- Bake rolls for 22-25 minutes rotating after the 12 min mark. They should all be golden brow on the tops.
- Remove from oven, butter the tops, and enjoy!
